Fast or Rational? A Response-Times Study of Bayesian Updating

چکیده
We present a simple model for decision making under uncertainty building on dual-process theories from psychology, and use it to illustrate a possible component of intuitive decision making of particular relevance for managerial settings. Decisions are the result of the interaction between two decision processes. The first one captures optimization based on Bayesian updating of beliefs. The second corresponds to a form of reinforcement learning capturing the tendency to rely on past performance. The model predicts that (i) in case of conflict between the two processes, correct responses are associated with longer response times, but (ii) if both processes are aligned, errors are slower. Further, (iii) response times in case of conflict are longer than in case of alignment. We confirm the predictions of the model in an experiment using a paradigm where an associative win-stay, lose-shift process conflicted with rational belief updating. (JEL D81, C91)

Bayesian Updating in the EEG
3 Abstract Research has shown that economic decision makers often do not behave according to the prescriptions of rationality, but instead show systematic deviations from rational behavior (e.g., Starmer, 2000). One approach to explain these deviations is taking a dualprocess perspective (see Evans, 2008; Sanfey & Chang, 2008; Weber & Johnson, 2009) in which a distinction is made between delibe...
متن کاملRational Irrationality: Modeling Climate Change Belief Polarization Using Bayesian Networks
UNLABELLED Belief polarization is said to occur when two people respond to the same evidence by updating their beliefs in opposite directions. This response is considered to be "irrational" because it involves contrary updating, a form of belief updating that appears to violate normatively optimal responding, as for example dictated by Bayes' theorem. In light of much evidence that people are c...
متن کاملBayesian Sample size Determination for Longitudinal Studies with Continuous Response using Marginal Models
Introduction Longitudinal study designs are common in a lot of scientific researches, especially in medical, social and economic sciences. The reason is that longitudinal studies allow researchers to measure changes of each individual over time and often have higher statistical power than cross-sectional studies. Choosing an appropriate sample size is a crucial step in a successful study. A st...
متن کاملFast Bayesian updating of large-scale finite element models using CMS technique and surrogate models
A Bayesian probabilistic framework for parameter estimation is applied for updating large-order finite element models of structures using response measurements. Fast and accurate component mode synthesis (CMS) techniques are proposed, consistent with the finite element model parameterization, to achieve drastic reductions in computational effort. Further computational savings are achieved by ad...
متن کاملBayesian Sample Size Determination for Joint Modeling of Longitudinal Measurements and Survival Data
A longitudinal study refers to collection of a response variable and possibly some explanatory variables at multiple follow-up times. In many clinical studies with longitudinal measurements, the response variable, for each patient is collected as long as an event of interest, which considered as clinical end point, occurs. Joint modeling of continuous longitudinal measurements and survival time...
